Sometimes the red proof marks (, , etc), brackets brackets and asterisks which mark the places on the page which comments refer to can obscure the page contents.

By clicking the eye button to hide these marks, you can see what is underneath.

Click it again to bring them back.

Alternatively you can use the

 

hide/view proofmarks

button on the menu which does the same thing.
